There are 64 squares and 32 pieces in a chess board. As a beginner, you must know how to set up a chess board, here is a step-by-step guide.

In chess, each piece has a specific name. In each step, you will find a chessboard layout with its names. Along with the names you will be able to know about chess rules related to a specific piece and how the chess pieces move.

Step 1: Boards light square must be on your right

Keep in mind, in chess borad out of 4 corners there are 2 light square corners and 2 dark square corners. you must keep the board in such a way so that any one light square corner stays at your right.

Step 2: Keep the Pawns at 2nd rank (row) on each side

Keep all the white Pawns in the same row (rank) where it’s written 2, and all the black Pawns in the row (rank) where it’s written 7.

Pawns are also known as soldier. It has a value of 1 point. Pawns are very important to protect minor and major pieces(knight, bishop, rook, queen, king). Pawns play very critical role in the endgame, as it goes to the last row rank(for white 8th rank, for black 1st rank) , it can become any of the minor or major piece (queen, rook, knight, bishop). Pawns can only move in the forward direction.

Step 3: Keep the Rooks(♖ or ♜) at the corner of each side

Rooks are also knows as elephant. It has a value of 5 points, It is the second most valuable piece after Queen. Rooks can move straight in any direction. Rooks are also used in castling the king. which brings the king at the corner of the board and protects it from getting attacked.

Step 4: Keep the Knights (♘ or ♞) next to the Rooks (♖ or ♜)

Knights are also knows as horses. It has a value of 3 points. knights are very tricky as it can jump over the pieces. Knights are short range pieces as, like rooks, knights can also move in any direction.

Step 5: Keep the Bishops (♗ or ♝) next to the Knights (♘ or ♞)

Bishops are also knows as Camels. It has a value of 3 points(~3.1). although, it has same points compare to the knight but it is slightly more valueable than the knight as it is a long range piece. Bishops can also move in any direction, like rooks, and knights. white bishop can move only on the light square and black bishop can only move on the dark square.

Step 6: Place your Queen (♕ or ♛) on the square of your piece color.

Your queen must be placed on light square if you have white color pieces your Queen(♕) must be placed on light square next to the Bishop. Chess setup king and queen looks a bit tricky but it will be simple if you will remember this rule.

Queen is the most valuable piece in the game. It has a value of 9 points. It has to be developed after minor pieces like knights and bishops are developed. Queen can move diagonaly (like a biishop) as well as straight (like a rook). Queens are mostly used to attack the opponents king and deliver checkmate. Queens can also move in any direction, same as knight, bishop and rook.

Step 7: Place your King (♔ or ♚) next to the Queen (♕ or ♛)

Now the last thing is to place the King(♔ or ♚) next to your Queen(♕ or ♛) and your chess board is ready to start the game of chess.

King is the most important piece of the game. It has no specific value point, but it has to be protected at any cost. If your king will be checkmated, you will lose the game.

Step 8: You are ready to start the game
